All-Butter ShortDead

By H. Y. Hanna

All Butter-ShortDead by H. Y. Hanna is a prequel to The Oxford Tearoom Mysteries Series. It’s about a woman named Gemma who leaves an executive career in Australia to go back to her hometown of Oxford, England and live out her dream of opening up a tearoom.

On the plane, she meets a woman named Jane. They were sitting next to each for twenty-four hours and there was nothing to do but share a little about themselves. When the plane finally landed, Jane seemed to be in a hurry to disembark from the plane, while Gemma waited until the crowd thinned out a bit. She noticed that Jane left her scarf on her seat, so she decided, since Jane told her where she was staying, to bring the scarf to her at her hotel.

When Gemma returned Jane’s scarf, Jane pleaded with her to stay and join her for a drink in the hotel bar. She got too drunk to find her way back to her room, so Gemma helped her.

After she saw that Jane was safely in her room, Gemma went down to the reception desk and was just about to leave the hotel when a maid came out of the elevator saying that someone was dead. That someone turned out to be Jane. The police thought they had Gemma to rights, as she was the last to see Jane alive.

When the news came out that Gemma was the only suspect in Jane’s murder, the bank  didn’t want to risk loaning her the money for her teashop. She was at the end of her rope.

Things go topsy-turvy when four of Gemma’s mother’s friends, who Gemma referred to as the ‘old biddies’, join forces to try to clear her name.

Did Gemma make the right decision when she came home to Oxford? Is she going to be able to make her dream come true, or will she live in this nightmare forever?

This book was a pleasure to read. It is a fun, fast, cozy mystery that kept me laughing from beginning to end. I am now reading the first book of the series (All-Butter ShortDead is the prequel), and I am loving it just as much. All-Butter ShortDead gets five stars and is a book the will stay on my TBR list.

The Counterfeiter-Catching Cat #1

The Counterfeirter Catching Cat by Alannah Rogers is the first book of the Beatrice Young Cozy Mystery Series. It takes place in the small town of Ashbrook, population 2000, where everybody knows everyone’s business, even their deepest, darkest secrets.

Beatrice is a divorced 40+ year-old with two cats, Hamish, a Maine Coon who has the nose of a detective, and Lucky, a sweet, black shorthair. Bee loves a good mystery and is reported to be married to her cats.

Bee is the owner of The Cozy Cat Cafe where she first learns of the counterfeiting ring. She, along with Hamish and Lucky, jumps into the action. The threesome start their slouthing and help the sheriff uncover, not only a counterfeiting ring, but a disappearance which turns into a murder. The town’s grapevine lights up like wildfire. Who is behind the counterfeiting? Who killed Jordan White?

Alannah Rogers kept my attention with her amatuer detecting and Hamish’s antics. The reason I only gave her 4 out of 5 stars is that I didn’t get to know Lucky as well as Hamish. I hope to learn more about Lucky in the next book.

Basic Witch: Witches of Salem (Gemma Bradbury Magical Cozy Mysteries Book 1) by Harmony Hart

“Basic Witch” is a delightful Cozy Mystery about a girl, Gemma Bradbury, and her cat, Titus, who fall into a magical world which is inhabited by creatures of fairy tales and folk lore. Gemma finds out through the Witch’s Coven that, not only is she stuck in this strange place, but she’s a witch and Titus is her familiar. If that’s not enough, she is accused of murder by an oaf of an detective. While she’s learning how to use her new skills she, along with her new friends (who are great characters, by the way), try to clear her name.

Ms. Hart has a style and imagination to be envied by other writers of the genre. I truly enjoyed this, sometimes laughing right out loud. I gave this book 5 stars and I can’t wait to read Book 2 of the series.

“My Cat Hates My Vet” by Amy Shojai

This book is written in the usual style of Amy Shojai who, as you know, is one of my favorite animal behaviorist.   It covers what to do when your cat has trouble with all of the stages of going to the vet, or anywhere else.

“My Cat Hates My Vet”  starts out with the first stage…getting her used to the carrier.  Amy suggests a few different carries, depending on the size of your cat.  For example, the carrier should have plenty of room for her to move around comfortably.  Getting your cat used to her carrier as she rides in the car may not seem like a big deal; but for those who have heard the heart-wrenching mews of a scared kitten, or the ear-splitting yowls of a mad cat while driving, know that this is not the case.  IT IS A VERY BIG DEAL!!

Ms. Shojai also suggests helpful tips like taking your cat into the vet when there isn’t anything wrong.  You do this to let the cat know that the vet and staff are not the enemy, and it is sometimes a fun place in which she can romp and play.  This way, there is less anxiety when she needs to go for her checkups, etc.

As usual, I found Amy’s “My Cat Hates My Vet” informative, as well as entertaining.    I give it 5 stars and wholeheartedly suggest it to any cat guardian.

“A Motive for Murder” by Morgana Best (Volume One)

I love Morgana Best. “A Motive for Murder” is the first of a four book series in which Misty Sales, an Aussie journalist for a paranormal magazine, who inherits her aunt’s house, strange neighbors, and a cat, Diva.  Together, Misty and Diva get in the middle of a war between two witch covens. It is a true battle of good versus evil and a race to see who will find a page from a book of witchcraft that enables the holder to stay young forever.

Misty is swept off her feet by Douglas, a seemingly honest man, with good intentions.  However, Diva does not approve and shows her dislike every time he comes around.

Then there is Jamie. Everyone around Misty is warning her to stay away from this man only Diva seems to trust him.   So, what is this page that everyone is seeking and why do all her new ‘friends’ think that she has it? Who can she trust?

Even though it was the second time around, I enjoyed this cozy mystery and give it 5 stars.
